Overview of Kenya

Location
The Republic of Kenya is located in the Eastern Africa region. The population is approximately 54 million people according to UN estimates. Its capital city is Nairobi located in the South-central part of the country. Kenya is amongst large economies in Sub-Saharan Africa after Nigeria and South Africa. Kenya is the regional hub providing easy connectivity to the region. It is bordered by South Sudan to the northwest, Ethiopia to the north, Somalia to the east, Uganda to the west, Tanzania to the south, the Indian Ocean is located to the southeast.

Capital City
Nairobi is the capital city and the largest city in Kenya. The name is derived from the Maasai phrase 'Enkare Nairobi', which translates to "place of cool waters". Nairobi is reffered as the World’s only Wildlife Capital because of the Nairobi National Park which is the only national park that exists within a capital city.
Nairobi is host to the United Nations headquarters in Africa, and houses two UN agencies that include; the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat).

Languages
Kenya is a linguistically diverse country where majority of population speak at least 3 languages. In addition to the 44 ethnic tribes, English is the official language while Swahili (Kiswahili) is the national language spoken by almost every Kenyan.  Sheng a mixture of Swahili and English, with a bit of other indigenous languages is also commonly spoken in urban areas and has gained popularity amongst the youths.

Climate
Kenya is a warm, dry country with seasonal rainfall.
The first wet season: March-May (long rains) and October-December (short rains).
Kenya enjoys a varied climate, ranging from tropical to temperate

Culture & People
Kenya is a multi-ethnic, multi-racial and multi-religion country. Persons from different backgrounds peacefully co-exist working, trading and living side by side.
The ethnic composition of the people of Kenya includes
Bantu: This includes the Gikuyu, Luhya, Kamba, Embu, Meru, Kisii, Mijikenda, Taveta, Taita, Pokomo, Bajuni and Boni
Cushites: This includes the Somali, Orma, Rendille, and Borana.
Nilotes: This includes the Luo, Kalenjin, Maasai, Teso and Samburu.

Sports
Kenya is a very sporting nation and is part of our culture. The most popular sports in Kenya are athletics,rugby and football. In athletics, Kenya has regularly produced stellar performances in especially long distance races such as the 800m,1500m,5000m and marathons. Kenya's dominance on the world stage has been umplified by legends such as David Rudisha,Catherine Ndereba and Eliud Kipchoge. In rugby,Kenya boasts one of the most charismatic teams from Africa in the Kenya sevens national teams(men and women). They have consistently emerge with top honours in various rugby tournaments.Football is the most popular sport in Kenya. It has a huge following of passionate and die-hard fans who support both local and international leagues especially the English Premier League.
